New treatments

Medication includes anti-clotting drugs to reduce the risk of stroke, and antiarrhythmic drugs to restore or maintain the normal heart rhythm or to slow the heart rate in people who remain in atrial fibrillation.

Non-drug management includes electrical cardioversion, which may be used to ‘shock’ the heart back to its normal rhythm, and ablation – in which radiofrequency energy is used to destroy tissue inside the heart that is causing the abnormal heart rhythm.
